Today I choose deer and wolves and bears, oh my (TIC00055f)

The PolyBlog
September 20 2020

We have been planning an outing for several weeks now to Parc Omega on the Quebec side, near Montebello, about an hour from Ottawa. We postponed it one week when the weather wasn’t cooperating, another time when we weren’t feeling well. And generally had delayed committing to it for most of the summer while we waited for some of the COVID protocols to iron themselves out.

I saw some friends on FB had gone in the interim, and it seemed like everything was working. So we went for 10:00 a.m. this morning, and although we had a lot of trouble getting Jacob going this morning (he is complaining a lot recently of not feeling well in the morning, sigh), we made it in time for our pre-booked slot. We had also stocked up on carrots from the local supermarket so that we wouldn’t have to go through any lines while we were there, but since they only had organic carrots at the store, we probably didn’t save anything on the pre-purchase.

When you enter the park, you’re immediately held up by large deer and elk demanding several carrots as our entry fee (the humans took us for a lot more than that earlier in the line). We weren’t allowed to feed any of the deer family with antlers this time around, but that’s not a problem to avoid, there are LOTS of others looking for food.

Jacob got to feed some medium-sized does to start, as did Andrea.

We progressed through the park, driving around lots of other members of the deer family, boar with piglets, Arctic Fox, some mountain goats, lots of geese, and some bison. At the half-way point, we stopped for washrooms, a bit of retail therapy (J got a stuffed deer, really cute, now named Delta), and a visit to the wolf observatory. Just in time for their lunch.

And we finished off with black bears.

Jacob got some really good pictures of the wolves, and I’m looking forward to seeing what else he and Andrea got with their phones when we “merge” all the photos together for a combined backup.

We were all tired out afterwards, so back home, some take out for dinner (there might have been some napping in there), and American Ninja Warrior qualifiers to watch on TV. A very good day.

Today I choose deer and wolves and bears, oh my.

What choices are you making today?

I try to be open to other people’s views, particularly if it is diversity-related or age-related perspectives. I don’t always share their views, but I try to understand them and be open to the insights they provide, use them to better my own thoughts and actions. That isn’t some altruistic endeavour or that I’m a … Continue reading →

Why am I blogging at 3 in the morning on a late Saturday night / early Sunday morning? Because blogging often helps me organize my thoughts and get them “out of my head” so I can focus on other things. It’s not a long post, don’t worry. The last month has been interesting for progress … Continue reading →

As most people who have read this blog from time to time already know, I’m big on time management techniques, various options for to-do lists and tracking tasks. I like to set ambitious annual goals, and then monitor them throughout the year. Some years turn out better than others. Whereas many people set resolutions and … Continue reading →

I occasionally like to share online articles that I like, and you’ll see sporadic posts entitled “Articles I Like” throughout the blog. But honestly, Curated is probably a more accurate title. I recently found an article by Benjamin Schaefer on the website Electric Literature, although I was led there by ThePassiveVoice website. The article is … Continue reading →
  • Schrodinger’s computer purge (part 1 / 3)January 15, 2023
So, I’m a techno-wannabe-geek with elements of hoarding in my DNA. I find it hard to dispose of working computer parts, long after I’ve outgrown the need for them. Some “saves” are practical and some are not. And like Schrodinger’s cat, my computer purge is both real and theoretical at the same time. A. Network … Continue reading →
