Articles I Like: The true power of the scribe

The PolyBlog
May 3 2012

One of the blogs I like to read is that of Ken Levine, TV sitcom writer extraordinaire who has worked on Mash, Cheers, Frasier, etc. And like most TV writers, he has to have other sources of income, and his is broadcasting. To wit, baseball game commentary. Recently he posted a story about how he was covering the Tidewater Tides against the Columbus Clippers, and decided to play a prank on the visiting team. See the excerpts below:

I noted that our dreaded rivals, the Columbus Clippers (Yankees ) were coming to town next and said, “Why don’t you call them all at 5 a.m. and welcome them to Tidewater.” Now you have to bear in mind that no one listened to minor league radio broadcasts other than players’ wives. Or so I thought. The next afternoon I arrived at the park only to learn that the Clippers had been besieged with pre-dawn wake-up calls.

The Clippers’ trainer…went ballistic when he saw me, calling me words that were too harsh even for DEADWOOD. And he vowed to get back at me when we were in Columbus the following weekend.

I calmly asked if he ever watched CHEERS.

He said, “Yeah, why?” wondering why that was relevant to anything.

I then asked if he ever caught some of the bar wars episodes between Cheers and Gary’s Old Towne tavern? Again, he said, “Yeah. So what?”

“Well, I wrote those shows…Do you really want to get into a practical joke war with me?”

See Ken’s comic musings and the moral of his story here: By Ken Levine: Comedy writers can be bad ass!.

A great post and funnier than most sitcoms today (well, excluding The Big Bang Theory perhaps, that one rocks)…dude, you really need to get a new show on the air!

  • What would you put in a personal health dashboard / framework?March 8, 2026
I started this year with a few short plans to work on health factors in my life. Some of it was prescribed; I needed a physical exam for certain pension forms. Others were ones that I was trying to do some proactive work on, like my teeth and my feet. And still others were more … Continue reading →
  • Book clubs 2026-03: Options for MarchMarch 8, 2026
February wasn’t as productive as I had hoped, at least not for my “bookclub reading”. I had 28 from book clubs below as potential reads, but my Christmas present hangover reads occupied most of my attention, plus some non-reading projects. Oh, and life itself, I guess. I read This Book Made Me Think of You … Continue reading →
  • 2026: O is for Organized and P is for PurgeFebruary 19, 2026
I feel like this project today is worthy of two letters. Overall, I want to be better organized, and some of that is computer-ish, with better use of OneNote; one part is paper-ish, for financial records and old school and work stuff I want to whittle down; and then there is just decluttering. I have … Continue reading →

Plot or Premise Peter and Harry try to figure out how to fight crime as a team. What I Liked I’m not a giant comics reader, but I’m enjoying the Ultimate series. Here the adult Peter Parker has figured out most of his roles and abilities, while working with Harry Osborne aka Green Goblin on … Continue reading →

Plot or Premise After the Maker reshapes Earth so there are no superheroes, Stark’s son sends a message through dimensions to activate Spiderman with a radioactive spider. What I Liked I’m not a giant comics reader, but I always loved the Spiderman universe. I’ve seen the movies, watched a lot of the cartoons, grew up … Continue reading →
