2021 in review — writing

The PolyBlog
December 18 2021

I did NaNoWriMo this year, and pumped out 50K words on the HR guide. I’m going to do some more writing over the holidays and hoping to launch in early 2022. That’s good progress, albeit much later in the year than I originally hoped.

I also hoped to do some other fiction writing, but I didn’t make a lot of progress on that…a few chapters here and there. I’m happy with the overall increase for the websites, and bumped up my number of reviews overall. Not as many as I hoped, partly as they are far too detailed in their present form. I need to find some shorter formats for the new year. I did, however, do a fair amount of planning in the year.

2021 in review — computers, media and websites

The PolyBlog
December 18 2021

I survived a major catastrophe early in the year on the website front, but barely. Still, it’s still alive. Another crash happened in early fall, and I escaped relatively unscathed due to processes and backups I put in place earlier in the year. Things are much more stream-lined now, and I made some progress on my photo galleries but not in the way I originally expected. I’ve also stepped back from it for several months.

Yet at home, I don’t feel like I have a good setup for backups and usage across computers. I am doing better with OneDrive on two machines, and a bit more with other PCs, but I need to do a full backup soon.

For media, I got an Apple TV and I love it. I expect I may have to give in and get one in the basement too. I don’t have music well setup yet, but I feel like I turned a major corner on streaming.

2021 in review — learning, astronomy and photography

The PolyBlog
December 18 2021

In 2021, I would say the primary focus for learning was fitness-related, and thus already counted.

In terms of general learning, I did nothing on crafts, nothing more on the Great Courses, and only minimal on writing tutorials.

For astronomy, I learned a lot, but I would say that was more in dribs and drabs rather than an organized approach to anything. I have large plans for 2022, and I got “organized” in 2021, but I would say the biggest event was the one that didn’t happen — I gave up on getting an observatory.

For photography, I made even less progress. I barely even took any photos all year.

Overall, not much in the area of accomplishments.

2021 in review — reading, activities and finances

The PolyBlog
December 18 2021

In 2021, I kept the Reading Challenge going but there were quite a few months where I didn’t do the wrap up / accounting until well after the end of the month, even in some cases several months later. I did some heavy binging in June, but the rest of the year was pretty hit and miss. I’m also far behind on reviewing the books I read.

For Activities, I started the year tracking about 9 large special events / projects to do, and all of them are still on my list.

For Finances, I did some cleaning up of some accounts, but a bunch of “big things” for planning are still not done. I’m hoping to get to them in the new year.

Overall, not much in the area of accomplishments.

2021 in review — cooking, family, and home

The PolyBlog
December 18 2021

In 2021, I didn’t make a huge amount of progress with cooking. We did a bit with the Raddish cooking sets, at least early on, but I got away from them. Almost all of the items on the list were bumped to next year.

For family, we started off better than we finished. We did some Lego early on, and had bigger plans to do more. We also enjoyed some escape room puzzles, and I thought some Kiwi crates for STEM would be fun. Almost all of them died on the planning table. We are spending a lot of time at night just doing our own thing.

On the overall home front, we made some good progress on desk / work areas. My area is going well, generally, and we got a new desk set up for Jacob. We’re close to a good arrangement for astronomy equipment in the garage, ordered some new furniture for the rest of the house, and I’m hoping by the end of the calendar year, we’ll be able to tick some big boxes on the to-do list still.

  • More workplanning on my new Calibre libraryMarch 28, 2026
I wrote earlier this week (Using Calibre to embrace my inner librarian for ebooks) about the Poly Library 3.0, and when I did, I thought I had most of my “work” done. I had decided on three main areas (the book profile, user engagement, and user tools), although, truth be told, I had four categories … Continue reading →
  • An update on Jacob…March 24, 2026
For those of you who don’t know, as I didn’t blog about this much before, Jacob decided to have surgery on his legs this year, which he did at the end of February. I’ve held off posting anything as I didn’t want to ask Jacob what he was comfortable with me sharing, but today was … Continue reading →
  • Using Calibre to embrace my inner librarian for ebooksMarch 23, 2026
I have used Calibre literally for years to manage all my ebooks. It started way back when Kindle was doing a huge business of people pushing freebies of their ebooks. Some good, some slush, all free. But it meant a LOT of ebooks to manage. So I tried a couple of programs, most of which … Continue reading →
  • What would you put in a personal health dashboard / framework?March 8, 2026
I started this year with a few short plans to work on health factors in my life. Some of it was prescribed; I needed a physical exam for certain pension forms. Others were ones that I was trying to do some proactive work on, like my teeth and my feet. And still others were more … Continue reading →
  • Book clubs 2026-03: Options for MarchMarch 8, 2026
February wasn’t as productive as I had hoped, at least not for my “bookclub reading”. I had 28 from book clubs below as potential reads, but my Christmas present hangover reads occupied most of my attention, plus some non-reading projects. Oh, and life itself, I guess. I read This Book Made Me Think of You … Continue reading →
