JotD: Car allergies (PWH00029)

The PolyBlog
June 17 2025
A complaint was received by the Pontiac Division of General Motors that a man’s car seemed to be allergic to vanilla ice cream. Every time he bought vanilla ice cream after dinner, his car wouldn’t start. Any other kind of ice cream, and it worked just fine. The Pontiac President was understandably skeptical about the letter but sent an engineer to check it out anyway. The engineer was surprised to be greeted by a successful, obviously well-educated man in a fine neighbourhood. He had arranged to meet the man just after dinner time, so the two hopped into the car and drove to the ice cream store. It was vanilla ice cream that night, and, sure enough, after they came back to the car, it wouldn’t start. The engineer returned for three more nights. The first night, the man got chocolate. The car started. The second night, he got strawberry. The car started. The third night, he got vanilla. The car failed to start. The engineer refused to believe that the car was allergic to vanilla ice cream and started taking detailed notes for multiple nights. In a short time, he had a clue: the man took less time to buy vanilla than any other flavour because of the layout of the store. The car was experiencing a vapour lock. If the guy bought any other flavour but vanilla, the car had time to cool down; if he bought vanilla, the car was too hot and wouldn’t start!

JotD: Benefits of Education (PWH00022)

The PolyBlog
June 13 2025
A friend of mine has a daughter who started out as a psych major, then switched to English Lit. After that, she tried pre-law, which was followed by international affairs, history, and, at present, she’s in philosophy. She may never graduate, but she’s unbeatable at Trivial Pursuit.

JotD: Laundry Day (PWH00020)

The PolyBlog
June 12 2025
Three women always hang their laundry out in the backyard. When it rains, however, the laundry always gets wet. All the laundry, that is, except for Sophie’s. The other two women wonder why Sophie never has her laundry out on the days that it rains. So, one day, they are all out in the backyard putting their clothes on the line when one of the women says to Sophie, “Say, how come when it rains, your laundry is never out?” “Well,” says Sophie, “when I wake up in the morning, I look over at Saul. If his penis is hanging over his right leg, I know it’s going to be a great day, and I can hang out the wash. If his penis is hanging over his left leg, I know it’s going to rain, so I don’t hang out the wash.” “What if he has an erection?” asks one of the women. “Honey,” says Sophie, “on a day like that, you don’t do the laundry.”

JotD: Serving lawyers (PWH00065)

The PolyBlog
June 11 2025
A man walks into a bar with an alligator under his arm and asks, “Do you serve lawyers here?” “Sure, we do,” says the bartender. “Good,” says the man. “I’ll have a beer and give me a lawyer for my alligator.”

  • Leveling up: Retirement contentMay 6, 2026
As I mentioned yesterday, I’m doing a “content” review of my websites to see if there are areas I should be expanding or contracting, comparing them to other blogs and posts that are out there. I would like to do more on retirement as I transition out of the public service, but I am always … Continue reading →
  • Leveling up: Government contentMay 4, 2026
Let me start by saying I like my websites. Sure, there are always things I could tweak here or there, or it could be on a faster server, or it could be more SEO friendly. I’d love to host videos inline without jacking the server costs. But overall, I like my two froggy homes. ThePolyBlog … Continue reading →
  • Book clubs 2026-04: Options for AprilApril 22, 2026
March was extremely productive in my personal life, but not so much for reading. I was still finishing My Friends by Fredrick Bachman, and the first 20-25% was a struggle. I loved it, in the end. And I’ve been doing huge personal projects, so no reviews lately. Let’s take a look at the options for … Continue reading →
  • AI testing: The Bad…Time loops, tech support quirks, and driftApril 18, 2026
By now, most people have seen some form of AI crop up in their tools. The most obvious one is Google’s search engine, which provides results from its AI mode first in the list. You can go pretty far with that prompt, even asking for image creation, although that’s a terrible place to create images … Continue reading →
  • More workplanning on my new Calibre libraryMarch 28, 2026
I wrote earlier this week (Using Calibre to embrace my inner librarian for ebooks) about the Poly Library 3.0, and when I did, I thought I had most of my “work” done. I had decided on three main areas (the book profile, user engagement, and user tools), although, truth be told, I had four categories … Continue reading →
