Productive Without Being Miserable

The PolyBlog
September 18 2016

Time Magazine ran an article recently on their site, but it originally showed up on a site called “Barking Up the Wrong Tree”. The article, This Is How To Be Productive Without Being Miserable: 8 Proven Secrets, was of interest to me because of how Time repackaged it for their site — “8 Ways to Be More Productive Without Feeling Like a Robot”.

It is one of the biggest challenges with To-Do lists and time management, and even goal-setting — the feeling that you have given control of your life over to mindless box-ticking, even when you are the one who set the boxes that would be ticked. The article says you don’t need help with knowing what to do, but rather more often than not, how to get going on it. I’m reading Jeffrey Kottler’s “Change” book, and it has similar thoughts early on in the text. The idea that something is holding you back. But I like the different approach here.

The changes in the article are relatively straightforward, and you can read the full list in the above link. Here are the pieces I liked that were a bit newer research areas.

  1. Start the day happy — it has links to help you figure out how to start off the day in a good mood, as the momentum of the good mood far outweighs the drag of a bad mood. So find what helps improve your mood and do it first. Eat breakfast, get some annoying task out of the way as long as it won’t drag you down too much (i.e. if the bump of doing it and getting it out of the way is greater than the drag of doing it), avoid getting bogged down in email right away, etc. If you can, find something that will be later in the day that you’re looking forward to, or even better, PLAN for something to be later in the day to drag you through the morning mugwumps.
  2. Stop worrying and make a plan or list. For me, this is the most important step. I actively do what is called “inbox zero” which is that I almost never have an inbox with more than a screen full of messages in it. If there is something to do from it, I note it on my to-do list, and move the email. So that what is left is actually things I’m going to do really soon i.e. usually before the end of the day. I also have a temp folder where I move stuff that I haven’t logged in my to-do list yet, but aren’t urgent so that I can do mass logging later. But by moving them out of my inbox and on to my list, I can then focus on managing my to-do list with priorities, timelines, groupings, etc. and NOT managing my inbox as a default pile of anxiety makers all saying “do me first”. The goal though is not about the to-do list or even managing your inbox — it’s to get it out of your head and on to paper so you don’t worry about it anymore;
  3. Track your progress and NOTE it by having a “did it” list. I’m not great on this, but it does help a bit with longer-term tracking. For a while, I was trying to write notes to my boss each week to say “Quick update, here’s where we’re at, what got done, etc.”. It was overkill and I stopped, but the positive part was to say to the team, “Okay, this is done, moving on.”

Overall, a better than average round-up, hence why I’m sharing. Click on the original link for the full article.

A noteworthy milestone

The PolyBlog
April 9 2016

This may seem odd to my friends who know that I work in government in the area of planning and even stranger to those who know a good part of that planning is performance measurement. Which means I know a lot about measuring inputs, outputs, outcomes, longer-term outcomes, etc. and the importance of targets, indicators, etc. Chief amongst those pieces for early tracking, more an extension of project management than corporate planning, is the concept of milestones.

Yet when it comes to personal goals, I almost never have milestones. I recognize their benefit, don’t get me wrong. They keep “projects” on track, they make sure you’re moving forward, they give you something smaller to focus on rather than just the big important goal/outcome at the end of the journey. And of course, people literally use them on trips — the various places en route that you’ll pass through or stop at en route to a larger destination.

But milestones are rarely important to me. I can see them, I know what they are, but I rarely document them nor do I “celebrate” when I reach them. I just keep chugging along and mentally note that I have reached them. Part of that is my knowledge that milestones are really false goals, ones that are generally irrelevant to the outcome. They’re a feint to keep people motivated and tracking their progress. Sometimes they are incredibly powerful milestones, like reaching 10,000 steps a day, such that people will often alter their normal behaviour at the end of the day to reach that milestone. Focusing on the day to day, today’s milestone, and its achievement, because “what gets measured is what gets done”.

Except since I already know how milestones work, and the philosophy behind them, the “trick” rarely works for me. It doesn’t motivate me at all.

There’s a second element that goes with that though. I do track things in retrospect. I take stock regularly, as per my last post on my progress. But not with set milestones usually. Put differently, I don’t use quantifiable goal setting which milestones require, but more qualitative check-ins with myself on how I feel I’m doing in my progress. Less rigorous, but the self-reflection is what keeps me on track, not an arbitrary 10%, 20%, 30% milestone.

Finally, there is an element that goes with lots of people who are high achievers, or goal-setters. Once we “achieve” the goal, we rarely stop to take time to mark the achievement. We almost always focus on “what’s next?” and skip past the event. We don’t dwell on our progress, we tick the box and move on.

When I graduated from Carleton, I almost skipped the ceremony. I have very little desire for pomp or circumstance of that sort unless it’s for others, but I took the time to intentionally mark the occasion given the time involved. But I still usually don’t worry about such things.

Which makes it so rare that I set a word count milestone for my blog. I wanted to reach 500K words last year, but when I cancelled my social media campaign, I modified that to take the whole blog to 500K.

And after averaging just over 1000 words a post and adding in entries dating all the way back to the earliest form of my website, plus adding eulogies for my mom and dad, stories about Jacob, and book reviews, I finally neared started to near my goal.

So, with this sentence, I have finally reached the overall goal of 500K.

Reading challenge
√√xxxxxxxxxxI tried the Kindle Unlimited option, but there wasn’t enough to hold my attention. In addition, most of the books on my reading challenge for this year are not available through Kindle Unlimited, so kind of a waste for the year and Andrea already has lots on her TBR pile. For the reading challenge, I’ve re-read the Harry Potter series, started in again on Crime and Punishment, and began reading Lawrence Block’s “Writing the Novel: From plot to print to pixel”. Quickly realizing that I won’t likely finish the reading challenge this year since many of the titles I chose are actually multiple books in a series, and I’ll likely read other stuff too.

Not quite ready for season reviews, but I have created the template for the layout, and the movie reviews one will be only slightly different. However, my big accomplishment is my book reviews — I finally have all 36 of my original ones up on the site, along with updated indices.

Articles I Like: Really? Tips to read more?

The PolyBlog
March 11 2016

One of my yearly goals that frequently reoccurs is to make time to read. Or simply to read more. So when I saw a link to an article about tips to “help you spend more time reading and finish books faster” (Source: 11 tips and tricks to make yourself read more), it seemed like a great potential resource. But when I read it, I couldn’t stop laughing at the suggestions. Maybe if you were a non-reader, but as a reader looking to carve out more time, they seemed hilarious to me.

1. Never leave home without a book — it says this is inconvenient if you don’t have a bag or purse to carry it in. Really? *I’m* a reader…half of my travel accessories are built around being big enough to carry both paper books and e-readers. I have small bags, medium bags, large bags. When I travel, I have large bags with enough room in them to carry my smaller bags for traveling around with once I get there. What reader doesn’t either have a bag if they are still a Luddite only reading paper or an ebook app (or five) on their digital devices?

2. Track your reading progress — Under the heading of “what gets measured, gets done”, here’s the thing … every second you spend TRACKING is a second you are not READING. Hello???? I want to read, not learn an app. However, tracking is important for shaming others who don’t read. If you don’t have the stats, you can’t humiliate others near as well.

3. Join a book club — book clubs are many things. But an incentive to read is rarely one of the most consistent. Reading is something YOU DO BY YOURSELF. You READ to READ, not so you can leverage it for more social interactions that will take you away from READING. On the other hand, if you’re low on your monthly quota of rich snacks, snooty acquaintances, and cheap wine, a book club might be for you!

4. Only read what you’re into — I’m sorry, that’s not how readers are wired. I read stuff I love. I read stuff I hate. I read stuff written on bathroom walls, graffiti on public buildings, the tags on mattresses, labels on cereal boxes, the name of the manufacturer of eye test charts when I’m waiting in the optometrist’s office. Read what I’m *into*? I’m INTO EVERYTHING — I’m a READER.

5. Knock out a few pages wherever and whenever you can — oh, you sly dog you. Books are like heroin or cocaine. You don’t get to just have a taste to take the edge off, you devour, you dive, you lose yourself in them until social relationships crumble around you because you were reading, lost track of time, and accidentally showed up 3 hours late to a wedding. Your own.

6. Read while you exercise — One of my favorites. I absolutely will read when I exercise. Or, more likely, I’ll exercise when I’m done reading. Which is when I finish reading every book ever written. Twice.

7. Read before bed — Really? Does this ever work out for anyone? I’m a READER, not a sleeper. This is how you ended up missing work the day after Harry Potter #4, 5, 6, and 7 came out. Cuz you were READING the night before, in bed, and stayed up for HOURS.

8. Get in tight with a book nerd — Here’s the thing. Book nerds have no friends. Well, not organic friends anyway. They have lots of paper friends. That’s why they’re BOOK NERDS — they don’t like PEOPLE!  Kind of hard to make friends with people who see you as an impediment to their continued reading.

9. Don’t read a bunch of things at one time — See point 4. I read EVERYTHING at once. If I accidentally leave a book at home, I’m on to the next book. I’m a reading ‘ho, I’ll become mentally intimate with anything with lines of text. Sometimes several partners a day. And when I’m done, I toss them aside like yesterday’s business, and I’m on to the next one! Sure, once in awhile, I’ll reminisce about my favorites, savour a particular experience, but the high fades like store-bought love often does, and I’m jones-ing for the next contact.

10. Find or make a quiet place — Quiet? Who needs quiet? I need a BOOK, after that the world disappears. Walls could crumble, buildings could fall, and I’d still be wondering what the Queen of Hearts is going to say or do next.

11. Couple it with something you love — Great idea. How do I couple reading with reading?

Maybe, after all, that article wasn’t meant for the likes of me…

And the mango chutney is really the key to the sweet taste. I wasn't a big fan of chutney before, but it is awesome here.
