Grave Secrets by Kathy Reichs (2002) – BR00048 (2005) – 🐸🐸⚪⚪⚪

The PolyBlog
May 25 2005

Plot or Premise

Tempe finds herself in Guatemala investigating a mass grave, and while she’s there, the local police decide to avail themselves of her forensics expertise to investigate four missing girls and one dead body in a sewer.

What I Liked

The cast of characters is large and there are some historical elements included related to Guatemalan history.

What I Didn’t Like

Tempe bounces around Guatemala too much, helping the only honest detective in a sea of corruption, and figures out missing girls, links to stem cell research, and takes her sweet time doing it. She even finds time to link it to her friends in Montreal, who just so happen to have gone to school with her detective partner in Guatemala. Beyond far-fetched, and casting aspersions on everyone she describes and the way they work, this one should have been a secret Reichs took to the grave. And finally, a bit of a spoiler, she rips off Janet Evanovich’s technique of not finishing the romance part of the book — you know she’s chosen someone but not whom. Stay tuned to the next in the series to find out which one, I suppose.

The Bottom Line

Pass on this one in the series.

Blood Money by Thomas Perry (1999) – BR00045 (2005) – 🐸🐸🐸🐸⚪

Plot or Premise

Jane Whitefield is happy in her new life as a suburban housewife. But then someone shows up at her door on the reservation, knowing that she used to be the-woman-who-makes-people-disappear. And this one needs to disappear — a young woman who worked for the mob, taking care of the house for an old man who was the mob’s moneyman with a photographic memory, keeping it all in his head. When the man escapes, and then gets whacked, Rita knows she needs help to disappear before the mafia finds her and wants her to tell the moneyman’s secrets — secrets only he knew. Jane doesn’t want to help, having left that life behind, but she has no real choice — the girl has come to her door, her real door, in her new life.

What I Liked

The plot deals with the mafia’s money, and their search for Jane. There is a strong sub-plot about the money, and while it is initially a little far-fetched, it takes the premise and breaks it down into manageable chunks that make it seem almost plausible.

What I Didn’t Like

Some of the story is pretty predictable — Rita is flaky, and you know she’s going to flake out on the group long before Jane realizes it, or at least, long before she admits it to herself. As well, there is a trigger for the initial premise that I figured out in the first few pages, and yet no one else ever figures it out in the book, leading to a surprise for certain people for no real apparent reason. Finally, there is a long series of circumstances that are either Jane simply driving around the country or a series of near-misses for the mafia spotting her that never feel particularly tense.

The Bottom Line

Good book in a great series.

Fresh Blood 3 by Mike Ripley and Maxim Jakubowski (Editors) with Lee Child (1999) – BR00041 (2004) – 🐸🐸⚪⚪⚪

The PolyBlog

Plot or Premise

The collection includes a story by Lee Child called ‘James Penney’s New Identity’, which is the first Jack Reacher story. However, quite frankly, he only has a very small part to play. The story revolves around a guy named James Penny. He works in a small town, where the only industry is a factory that has just laid him off. He storms off, causes damage en route, and the police are after him for the problems he’s caused. It was accidental, but that isn’t going to matter much if they catch him. Enter Reacher to help him out.

What I Liked

I liked the idea of one bad thing getting out of hand and leading to a lot of other problems in Penney’s life.

What I Didn’t Like

Reacher enters the story at the end to save the day, but it’s basically a coincidence. There’s nothing tying the resolution to the rest of the story really, and you also don’t get a good feeling for why Reacher was there in the first place and his backstory.

The Bottom Line

Only read it for the one story.

The Punisher by D.A. Stern (2004) – BR00040 (2004) – 🐸⚪⚪⚪⚪

Plot or Premise

Frank Castle is ready to move to London. He’s worked undercover for years for the DEA, now he’s ready to take a desk job and spend time with his family. But his last case goes a bit sour and an unknown newbie to crime gets killed along with Castle. But then the newbie turns out to be the son of a big-time gangster who wants revenge on the agent responsible for his dead son. And on the agent’s family. And on anyone who ever loved the agent. So, he exacts revenge but fails to kill the agent. Now the agent, Castle, wants revenge from beyond the grave.

What I Liked

I liked the premise, and as this is a novelization based on the film, a lot of the description is very visual. The pace moves along well and there is little time to worry about not enough stuff happening.

What I Didn’t Like

Neither the writing nor the story is first-rate. It moves along, from cliché to cliché, and there are lots of reasons en route to just stop reading. I didn’t and I kind of regret that as I don’t think this is a series I’ll follow. Love the character of Castle, hate this version.

The Bottom Line

Punishment for the reader.

Sanctuary by Jenny Carroll (2002) – BR00033 (2004) – 🐸⚪⚪⚪⚪

Plot or Premise

Jess Mastriani got hit by lightning, and now she’s psychic. So she’s been calling in tips to the missing person line and telling the feds where to find the kids. The FBI wants her to do more, but she told them she lost the gift (which of course they don’t believe). And when a local kid shows up dead with strange militia markings on him, Jesse gets drawn into local militia groups and right-wing nuts in general, with the feds following along behind.

What I Liked

Not much — although it is good they still have Jess acting like a teenager.

What I Didn’t Like

While I prefer this characterization of Jess to the TV-series that has changed her into a kick-in-the-door, guns-blazing federal agent, this individual story is waaaay over the top. Like Hardy Boys meets the A-Team.

The Bottom Line

Way over the top.

Let me start with a confession. I only have 12 recipes on the website. Not much of a start, right? But this is part of my anal-retentive side. I like to curate recipes, find some good ones, and then put them on my blog. Except that I have hated the design of my recipes for … Continue reading →
