The Conquered by Dafydd ab Hugh (1999) – BR00020 (2001) – 🐸🐸⚪⚪⚪

Plot or Premise

This is the first of a 3-book series dealing with a time when Bajor takes over the station for a trial period of 60 days. Kai Winn is in command, and her past is revealed through a series of flashbacks to the Occupation and her actions to help the resistance. Worf, Sisko, O’Brien, Quark and Odo are stranded on a planet where all the citizens have advanced technology that has reduced them to a complete dependency relationship. Renegade Cardassians have invaded the planet and have no trouble picking off the inhabitants — all they have to do is cut the power to the technology. Dax and Bashir are also on the planet in a different environment.

What I Liked

Dax and Bashir’s trials and tribulations aren’t bad and there is an interesting interplay with some cadets.

What I Didn’t Like

Kai Winn’s character comes off far too “mature” for the period, and belies the changes when she actually reached power. Major Kira’s character is barely fleshed out, and mostly appears as a caricature of the real character on the series. None of the four stranded characters are worth reading about here, and are pale imitations of the real characters on the series.

The Bottom Line

Not bad but not great.

Avenger by William Shatner (1997) – BR00099 (1999) – 🐸🐸🐸🐸⚪

Plot or Premise

This is the third in a Star Trek trilogy, with nanites, sentient Borg, and Vulcan terrorists.

What I Liked

The portrayal of the TNG crew is a little better in this book, perhaps reflecting the better portrayals seen in the TNG movies. It links Kirk, Spock, Picard, and the entire history of the various Enterprises together with Sarek.

What I Didn’t Like

The Bottom Line

All about renewal and cycles.

The Return by William Shatner (1997) – BR00098 (1999) – 🐸🐸🐸⚪⚪

Plot or Premise

This is the second in a Star Trek trilogy, with renegade Romulans working with the Borg.

What I Liked

There are some decent scenes with Data, and some interesting interactions between old TOS crew and new TNG crew.

What I Didn’t Like

Most of the TOS crew are not really much like themselves, except Spock, so not very “believable”. Bones is almost a caricature. Kirk and Worf have a fight that is ridiculous.

The Bottom Line

Worst of the three.

The Ashes of Eden by William Shatner (1996) – BR00097 (1999) – 🐸🐸🐸🐸🐸

Plot or Premise

This is the first in a Star Trek trilogy, with Spock reminiscing about Kirk’s last mission, one that took place after retirement and involved an alluring woman.

What I Liked

The present time takes place just after Kirk’s death in the movie Generations, and is a great story of the old crew. One of the best I have ever read. There’s even a fight between Kirk and the Enterprise against his old crewmates.

What I Didn’t Like

n/a

The Bottom Line

Almost perfect.

Saying goodbye to my nephew BrianJuly 3, 2026
Last night, we had a celebration of life for my nephew Brian. He was 51. There was a good turnout, as the saying goes, of family and friends. A group that Brian himself would have felt was too large and too much fuss. And as I looked at the picture boards that his sister Julie, … Continue reading →

Sweet Chicken Curry Slow-Cooked with Mango ChutneyJune 16, 2026
Sweet Chicken Curry: This was an adaptation from a diet recipe book for slow cookers, and was a pretty easy recipe (particularly using the slow cooker, but also just the limited number of items to chop / dice / slice). And the mango chutney is really the key to the sweet taste. I wasn't a big fan of chutney before, but it is awesome here.
